Wolverines Kick Off New Campaign

The Wolverines took the journey down the M6 to face Premiership heavyweights Tamworth Phoenix, in their first taste of top flight action since the reformation of the adult team, and the Phoenix certain gave them a baptism by fire.

Tamworth immediately shut down the Lancashire offence, forcing them to punt. The Wolverines were then punished on the Phoenix' first play, a pass deep for a touchdown. As the shellshocked Wolverines took the field again, their offence looked to pass, only for a ricochet on the ball leaving it in the arms of the Phoenix lineman who took the ball to the house.

Two touchdowns down inside two minutes. Premiership football had arrived. The wolverines continued to fight but, despite their best efforts, were 33-0 down at the half.
After strong words by Head Coach Danny Bowles, Lancashire kicked off the second half, performing much better against the experienced Phoenix. On a number of occasions getting in to field goal range, bravely opting to go for a tochdown rather than the three points, but just couldn't get the break they needed.

Tamworth eventually ran out 46-0 winner and the long drive home was spent with players and coaches even more determined to improve and driven to make an impact, back in the big time!

Wolverines Earn Sport England Support

The Lancashire Wolverines are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant of over £8000 by Sport England to help widen the reach and participation of American Football in Lancashire.

The grant was awarded following the success the Wolverines, who are part of the Lancashire Academy of American Football, has had in supporting junior players, and introducing new people to sport. It recognises the active culture and progressive attitude the Academy holds dear as we move forward.

Academy Chairman Simon Purcell was understandably pleased with the news.

"The award of this Sport England grant is great news for the sport of American Football in Lancashire. It will enable more young people in Lancashire to try the sport and fits perfectly with Sport England's current motto of: 'Give Sport A Go'. We will use the money to purchase new Club equipment that can be loaned to new players to reduce the cost of participation. The grant comes at a perfect time as we see more and more young players aged 16-24 wishing to join our Club following the NFL games played at Wembley each year."

The Academy will use the funds to improve the quality of the coaching equipment at our disposal, and to reach out to even more people aged 16-24 interested in the sport.

Lancashire Wolverines Head Coach Danny Bowles, who also acts as the Financial Director, was also excited by the news

"The grant is great news for the academy, and is acknowledgement of the large amount of effort all the volunteers involved put in to getting young people involved in American football. As a coach, I'd like to thank sport England for helping us remove the barriers some people face in getting involved in the sport, and I'm sure all our coaches can't wait to work with the new members."

Academy Welcomes BBC Breakfast to Lancashire

The Lancashire Academy of American Football made a great start to the 2013 by coming together and welcoming the BBC's Mike Bushell and his film crew to try out the sport of American Football. On a cold friday evening at UCLan University over 100 representatives from youth teams Burnley Tornados, Chorley Buccaneers, Preston Pythons and Standish Raiders, university teams UCLan Rams and Lancaster Bombers and the Lancashire Wolverines & Colts were in attendance to show him the ropes in both flag and contact football.

The BBC joined the Academy to film an example of the sport to air on Saturday's BBC Breakfast show before this year's Superbowl in New Orleans.

Academy chairman Simon Purcell said "This has been a fantastic night not only for the Academy but for Britball as a whole. For us to have been given the opportunity to represent the British game just before the Superbowl is a privilege and shows how hard everyone in the Academy has worked in enabling us to become a beacon in the football community."
